Your gums perform an important function in your body. They protect and support the teeth, as well as provide blood flow to the jaw bone and tooth structures.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal Disease is a progressive disease that begins when bacteria penetrate and grow beneath the gums. As the disease spreads, gum tissue and eventually bone become infected and are destroyed. If left untreated, periodontal disease will break down enough bone and gum tissue to cause the teeth in the affected area to become loose and eventually fall out.
Common signs of Periodontal Disease are:
Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating hard food
Receding gums, causing the teeth to look “longer”
Inflamed, swollen or infected gums
Persistent bad breath
Loose or separating permanent teeth
Sores in your mouth
A change in the way your teeth fit together when biting
A change in the fit of partial dentures
Stress, smoking and poor nutrition can be contributing factors to gum disease. Recent studies also indicate that there is a link between the bacteria that cause periodontal disease and increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and preterm low birth weight.*
Periodontal Disease does not Hurt
Surprisingly, most cases of periodontal disease do not hurt until they reach advanced stages. Early detection is the key – at each preventive visit, Dr. Durden and our Hygiene Team will conduct a thorough analysis of your oral health, including measurements of your gums to determine your periodontal health "score".
If diagnosed early, periodontal disease, or its preliminary stage, gingivitis, can often be treated effectively with nonsurgical or laser therapy supported by effective home care.
